Airborne Nation - "The Smoking Gun"

"The Smoking Gun"

Chad P. Morrison, Friday, June 12, 2009

The federal government has gone to far. This new legislation, The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act (123 Stat. 776-1858)aimed at the tobacco companies, is a farce. It is a wolf in sheep's clothing my fellow citizens. If the government cared about our health, then we would have an optional government healthcare program for those of us who needed it. If the government cared about our health, they would not be spending our tax dollars in Iraq and Afghanistan. They would be spending it here on health care and education, which leads to a health conscious society. They want to control the private sector. Wake up America! Soon, soda pop and candy will be carrying giant warning labels, and then they will outlaw anything they want. They already have proposed such ridiculous legislation in California. Furthermore, the government is going to use this legislation to create a precedent to take over our lives. This is their goal. It is, historically, always the goal of government to subvert the people. The people have to control the government, not vise versa. We have to make a stand now! Since 9-11, things have gotten so regulated that in order to get a job, to volunteer, or even to camp at some campgrounds, you have to pass a background check. How long before we see people deemed unfit by our government shopping only at special stores, working menial jobs, if any, and forbidden from recreational activities? Or worse... Since when did disagreement with the government make you a social deviant or a traitor? Obama has also signed legislation that states any person deemed a danger to society can be jailed and held indefinitely, Without Trial. Are we to stand idly by while they keep us in check at every turn. Freedom is calling. Stand up now or be a slave in the future.

While I do agree with the general sentiment of this piece, the idea that the government is constantly looking for new ways to regulate the every day lives of its citizens, I am not entirely sure that using the The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, was all that effective. This legislation's primary purpose was to attack smoking amongst minors. It has been well known for years that tobacco companies have actively advertised with children in mind. They have done so in the hopes to create new life long, addicted, customers. The law was far from perfect, but it has been relatively effective in making sure that tobacco ad campaigns are held responsible for ads that intentionally target youth. This is a good thing. I believe that using something like the USA Patriot Act (115 Stat. 272) would have been much more appropriate. This law is what originally gave the post 9/11 government the right to tap people's phones without a warrant, to enter people's homes without a warrant, to detain people for indefinite periods of time, without cause, and more. Chad is very much on target with the conception that crap like this has got to go, and that the only way it is going to do so, is if the people make it happen. Further, he is right that if nothing is done, such things will become standard government operating procedure, which since he wrote his piece, they have begun to do. Both The USA Patriot Act and The Protect America Act (121 Stat. 552), have been renewed, and more regulation is coming. How long are we going to allow this stuff continue before we finally reach the point where we have had enough? It needs to be soon.....
